RESEARCHING THE SOUTHEAST ASIAN ART MARKET

When I started as a researcher of the Southeast Asian art market for my Master's dissertation, nothing prepared me for my little journey. It was an ambitious undertaking - 6,500 auction transactions in Singapore and Hong Kong over six years. It provided for several personal interactions with dealers, auction houses, art historians and curators, collectors and artists from Indonesia, Singapore, Thailand, Philippines, Vietnam, Malaysia and Hong Kong. Fourteen of these selected representatives came together on this 'virtual platform' to result in the first comprehensive study of the Southeast Asian art auction market.  I remember receiving a little comment from a supervisor on my research methodology that read "I suspect you may find yourself swamped with data. Please prove me wrong."

He was spot on. Inundated I was, but not with data. Getting to them was the challenge. It busted a few personal myths along the way....
