Hsieh Teh Ching in Singapore

Totally star-struck 🤩 🤩 🤩 🤩 meeting #hsiehtehching in person. ⁣ ⁣ Well done Seelan Pillay from Coda Culture for this major coup. Respect!!! The response was of course overwhelming, in fact, it was too good. The room was so crowded that everyone was bunched together shoulder to shoulder. I was in there for about 10 minutes and felt like passing out, which was a shame as he had really interesting things to share. ⁣There were many people who had to stand along the corridor outside the space, drenched in perspiration.

Hsieh was showing images and talking about what he had to do to psychologically and emotionally cope with isolating himself for a year in the prison cell - without speaking, reading, writing, listening to the radio, or watching the television. I only wish everyone could hear clearer and engage with the content better. ⁣ ⁣ I can’t help but ask this: We have huge and glorious museums and auditoriums in Singapore. This is one instance where facilities for presentations that could cater to crowds would make a great difference; after all, this is one of the most important performance artists. Why are our museums not making available their venues? Over dinner, someone asked, “What are our museums for?”⁣ ⁣ Thank you Coda Culture for organising this and working with what was available 🙏🙏🙏. The portion I heard was an eye-opener. Much appreciated and unforgettable. ⁣ 1. With artists HSIEH Teh Ching and Seelan Pillay. ⁣ 2. Video capture of an excerpt of HSIEH taking about what he ate during the year.⁣ 3. Picture of the crowd.⁣ 4. Video capture of his other work, Time Clock Piece, where HSIEH took a photo on the hour, every hour, for 365 days. ⁣ ⁣ Read ArtAsiaPacific’s very insightful 2-part interview with the artist. ⁣⁣
